Metformin 500mg is a biguanide class oral hypoglycemic agent widely used as the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity. Unlike sulfonylureas, it does not cause hypoglycemia when used alone and is weight neutral. It is suitable for patients who are overweight or obese.
